The Dress

Let’s face it, this dress was probably the biggest thing since sliced bread.

On Feb. 26, a dress worn at a wedding became the hottest topic of the night. Tumblr user swiked posted the famous photo asking a simple question: “Is this dress white and gold, or blue and black?”

Not long after her post, the Twitter hashtag #TheDress quickly blew up on the Internet.

The dress was proven to be blue and black, but the mystery of how people can see two different colors on the same dress still confused many. According to a Feb. 26 Buzzfeed post, the reason why people see either blue or black, or white or gold is because they are interpreting the light coming into their eyes differently.

“In the case of the dress, some people are deciding that there is a fair amount of illumination on a blue and black (or less reflective) dress,” said Cedar Riener, associate professor of psychology at Randolph-Macon College, mentioned in the article. “Other people are deciding that it is less illumination on a white/ gold dress (it is in shadow, but more reflective).”

The Oscars

Needless to say, The Oscars, had some incredible moments this year. The hilarious Neil Patrick Harris took stage and hosted the event.

A memorable moment in Oscar history was when Patricia Arquette won for “Best Actress in a Supporting Role,” but her acceptance speech was what people were talking about the next day. She won for Boyhood and began to thank her cast and crew then went on to talk about women’s equality and wage equality.

“To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights,” Arquette said. “It’s time to have wage equality once and for all. And equal rights for women in the United States of America.”

For the 50-year anniversary of The Sound of Music, Lady Gaga took the stage to perform a tribute. While Gaga is known for her shocking performances, she has recently been taking a different turn with her music these days.

Julie Andrews walked on stage at the end of the performance and gave Gaga her highest praise.

The biggest Oscar winner of the night was Birdman winning in the categories for “Best Picture,”“Best Director” and “Best Actor.” Actress Julianne Moore won for “Best Actress” and “Glory” by John Legend and Common won for “Best Original Song.” The winner for “Best Writing Adapted Screenplay” went to The Imitation Game and “Best Visual Effects” went to Interstellar.

Paper Towns

The book sold millions, and the projected success for the movie could mean just as much. John Green, the author of the book, confirmed his book was turning into a movie late last year.

After the success of The Fault in Our Stars last year, expectations for Paper Towns are just as high. The film stars Cara Delevingne and Nat Wolff, and follows two teenagers living in Orlando with an adventure waiting to happen. Margo and Quentin were friends as kids, but as they grew up, they lost touch.

One night senior year, Margo climbs into Quentin’s bedroom window and asks him to help her vandalize her ex-boyfriend’s mistress’s home. After a night of trouble, they go back to their homes expecting everything to go back as normal. The next day, Margo goes missing. Quentin finds clues to where she is and goes out to find her.

The movie will be released July 24, and the trailer was released on March 19.

SXSW

SXSW 2015 wrapped up this past Sunday, March 22 in Austin, Texas. The week long music, technology and film festival included many thrills for entertainment enthusiasts.

One of the more interesting parts of the festival, unrelated to the more popular music and film spectacles, was NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden’s “virtual conversation.” Snowden encouraged technology companies to incorporate more security and privacy settings in their business. The Snowden Q&A was said to be highly exclusive with only around 20 people invited to the chat, according to The Verge.

As always, film debuts were also a big part of the festival. Some noteworthy premieres included were first- time director Ryan Gosling’s Lost River and the highly anticipated film “Get Hard” staring actors Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell.

Some of the biggest music acts also included surprises. During producer Mike WiLL Made It’s performance, singer Miley Cyrus popped up to do her part in “23” and also managed to do a rendition of her hit, “We Can’t Stop.” Other highlights included rapper J.Cole’s Dreamville takeover which featured Big Sean, Joey Bada$$, Bas and J. Cole, of course.

Finally, one of the more unconventional but absolutely awesome displays at SXSW was the Bates Motel. The actual Bates Motel. The popular TV show on A&E, based on Alfred Hitchcock’s famous Psycho, built a mock motel and gave lucky fans the chance to spend the night where the infamous Norman Bates worked.
