Newest Netflix Flicks to Further Fuel Your Procrastination
The hottest new movies and TV shows Netflix has added to its roster
As autumn begins, Netflix is adding new TV shows and movies to its streaming library.
In September alone, 20 new seasons and 40 films became available. How can a busy college student possibly be expected to wade through webpage after webpage trying to decide how to not spend his or her time studying?
Luckily, this article is here to breakdown the best of what’s new on Netflix and make your procrastination as productive as possible.
Need some laughs after a stressful day of philosophy quizzes, calculus lectures and tedious papers? Well, the final season of How I Met Your Mother arrives on Netflix on Sept. 26. Josh Radnor stars as a father relaying the story of how he met his kids’ mom. While this might seem like nothing special, it is the “crazy misadventures [that] make it a hilarious, overdramatized series,” according to freshman Kimberly Sanford.
Sanford cites scenes such as the robot fight and doppelganger encounter as some of the many hilarious episodes that have gained How I Met Your Mother its cult following. Rotten Tomatoes awarded the ninth season the fresh rating of 80 percent. Let’s just all collectively agree to ignore the season finale.
If you’re looking for something more escapist than the average sitcom, look no further than The Walking Dead. Season four of The Walking Dead begins airing on Sept. 28. On days when learning how to survive the zombie apocalypse strikes you as more applicable than your physics lab (hint: every day), The Walking Dead is the perfect program to watch.
Movie-wise, an incredibly diverse group of films will become available to stream this month. Some standout movie night choices include School of Rock, Grace Unplugged and Silver Linings Playbook.
Actor Jack Black’s classic, School of Rock, follows Dewey Finn as a mooching musician who haphazardly ends up substitute teaching for fourth graders at a snotty, private school. Of course, Dewey ends up disregarding the syllabus and turning his class of stuck up, plaid-wearing 9-year-olds into rock stars. As kids, this movie was responsible for planting a new hope in our hearts for subs, inspiring us to stick it to the man and, more importantly, introducing us to actress Miranda Cosgrove.
If you’re wanting another throwback after viewing Black’s finest work, Grace Unplugged is a good option. A pleasant, Kirk Cameron-esque Christian flick, it centers around the daughter of an ex-rock star who moves to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of stardom. This movie stands out because of its star: AJ Michalka. For all the 2000’s kids ready for some Aly & AJ nostalgia, look no further. Grace, Michalka’s charcter, sings her way through the City of Angels, only to realize that what she really wants is a career in Christian music centered in her hometown.
On the opposite side of the film spectrum from the benign Grace Unplugged lies the edgy Silver Linings Playbook, which comes out on Sept. 16. Actor Bradley Cooper stars as a man who suffers from bipolar disorder and returns to his parents’ home after a stint in a mental institution. Soon he meets Tiffany, played by actress Jennifer Lawrence, who might be even more mentally unstable than himself, and, they enter a ballroom dancing contest.
While the film won critical acclaim, including an astounding 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, Lawrence’s performance in particular garnered her a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. This film ranks as a must see, if only to remind the world that J. Law was once known for her remarkable talent and not for her unauthorized photos.
As you can tell, Netflix provides subscribers with plenty of options this September. Our only hope is that one will give purpose to your procrastination.
