Little Mix has always had a very clear message: female empowerment. In past albums they have portrayed messages such as walking away from a relationship that is “Going Nowhere,” having confidence in yourself, and the idea that we all wished we could go back and tell ourselves to be a little more confident. With these past messages in mind, one would expect their newest album “Get Weird” to follow along the same lines; however, it has a bit of a different tune.

With its retro beats and minimal bass, the music behind the lyrics is alluring but odd. Weird, you might even say. The variety of songs on “Get Weird” are reminiscent of songs from other artists, for example, if you liked “Talk Dirty to Me” by Jason Derulo, then a version of it can be found on this album under the title “A.D.I.D.A.S.” And for anyone looking for a sound similar to Kelly Clarkson’s “People Like Us,” then Little Mix’s “Weird People” is perfect. Even if you’re looking for a sound as sugary pop- like as “Oops I Did it Again,” you can find it in Little Mix’s “OMG”.

Contrary to their previous albums, “Get Weird” carries more of a “dirty” undertone, until you get to “A.D.I.D.A.S,” whose innuendo is blatantly clear. Empowerment does come through with “I Won’t” and “The End” from phrases such as “I know nothing good comes easy, if it did I wouldn’t be me,” and the “I can’t keep breaking up with you” Mo- Town style jazzy sound of “The End”. And the final song on the album, “The Beginning,” is sung acapella, which gives it a very personal feel that you can tell means something to the girls, but is left open to interpretation for the listeners.

Even through the odd, retro beats, and the very naughty undertones of the album, they manage to keep every song relatively open to interpretation, which is really what all great songs have in common. All in all, their new album isn’t their best, but it certainly grows on you after a while.
