POSITION OVERVIEWApplications accepted from: All Persons InterestedDivision: Greenspace Management & Facilities Management DevelopmentReporting Location: Various LocationsWorkdays & Hours: Monday - Thursday 6:30 AM - 3:30 PM Subject to ChangeDESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe City of Houston is seeking interns to assist the Parks and Recreation Department in the summer of 2021. The purpose of this position is to further the student's understanding and experience in the field of the parks and recreation (programming, park planning, administration, open space management, etc). The intern will operate as a Laborer who will work outside, in gardens, cleaning and de-littering, and working with small tools. This applicant must also be customer service friendly.Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities: Digging, excavating, trenching, and backfilling Keeping sites facility clean and organized Performing or assisting with minor maintenance and repairs Assist in performance of clean-up prior and after maintenance work Meet or exceed company safety standards Perform other job responsibilities as assigned Adhere to all City of Houston and O.S.H.A. rules and regulations at all times Other duties as assigned.WORKING CONDITIONSThis position is located outdoors. There are occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions. The position may involve dealing with modestly unpleasant situations. Due to COVID, position may be converted to a virtual earn-n-learn training format. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSAbility to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and basic written instructions. May have a basicknowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation. May require a basic knowledge of a particular subjectarea. (Individuals may be high school students.) Must be 16 years of age or older.EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSNo experience required.LICENSE REQUIREMENTSNonePREFERENCESPreference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants:Able to lift 40 pounds. Must be proficient to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and basic written instructions. May have a basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. May require a basic knowledge of a particular subject area. (Individuals may be high school students.)You are expected to wear clothing conducive to working outdoors. Steel toe boots are required. You must present a clean, neat, and tasteful appearance. Clothing with printed messages or statements is not appropriate. Comfortable clothing includes full length t-shirts, jeans, etc. No opened toe shoes.
