The Center for Excellence serves as the innovation hub at BakerRipley by leading a collective learn, build, and test process that proves and improves our impact. Internship projects are available in one or more of our three key, overlapping functional areas:

Design and Innovation:

You are supporting the team to undertake innovative program and process design.

  • Support community-driven design processes
  • Inform design through data aggregation and analysis
  • Draft recommendations regarding best practices and innovative design models
  • Contribute to strategy decisions & organizational effectiveness
  • Informing strategy and design in program areas related to, but not limited to, early, K-12, and adult education, workforce development, disaster recovery, small business, immigration, community engagement

Evaluation and Research:

You are supporting evaluative efforts to determine if goals were achieved and contribute to data-driven decision making

  • Research to inform program or organizational direction
  • Analyzing and visualizing data for publications, requests, and reports
  • Supporting continuous quality improvement process for data collection and dissemination
  • Supporting social impact research and evaluation

Business Development:

You are supporting the team to make research-based and sustainable business decisions.

  • Developing feasibility studies
  • Writing white papers
  • Performing cost benefit analysis
  • Landscape scanning
  • Financial modeling


Key Project Support | COVID-19 Agency Impact Analysis

For this internship, we are seeking an intern to lead the development of a comprehensive report that documents the agencys response to COVID-19. The compilation of this data will result in a report that will seek to encourage proactive preparation of the agency for a similar, future disaster by informing not only of the pandemics impact and inhibitors but also of staffs goals and visions regarding program implementation, operation, and preparation.

Key internship components will include:

  • Development of interview and survey questions to solicit insights from agency staff.
  • Interviewing key agency leaders from a variety of programs and functional areas.
  • Aggregating, analyzing, and coding new and existing qualitative data collected from interviews
  • Surveying staff on
  • Working with our evaluation team to collect quantitative data around COVID-19 response efforts.
  • Final report writing and data visualizations.
  • Presentation to agency leads on major findings and key takeaways.

Key Project Support | Strategic Communication & Content Creation

For this internship, an intern would lead the team in the creation of communication strategies that will allow us to share our latest findings, methods, research, design practices, etc. in a manner that is concise, engaging, and accessible to BakerRipley staff outside of our team. The intern would connect with different divisions within the agency to determine what communication approach they would be most receptive towards (text, email, presentation, lunch & learn, video, infographic, etc.), support our team in transcribing our learnings and methods into effective communication for prescribed audiences, and building out modular content toolkits that will allow us to follow a standard process for communicating our work. Through this project, you will help us create a shared understanding of our teams role, reinforce a culture of transparency & inclusion, and allow others to replicate our methods in their own work.

Key internship Components:

  • Survey divisions and program leads across the agency to determine how they best want to receive information and interpret results from our team
  • Develop effective communication strategies that translate our design, research, and evaluation work for prescribed audiences
  • Build a modular content framework for each communication strategy
  • Visualize content using different channels (text, presentations, infographic, email, video, etc.)

Techniques/Skills: We are committed to utilizing the unique strengths that interns bring.

  • Projects will be challenging, requiring skilled, sensitive, and dedicated interns able to manage complex and changing goals.
  • Creativity, a sense of humor, and a passion for social justice issues are important.
  • Exceptional writing skills
  • Experience with and/or interest in qualitative data analysis
  • Research abilities
  • Data visualization skills.


  • Times: Full-time, 40-hours per week for 12 weeks, June August (flexible start and end dates)
  • Compensation: $1,500 stipend
  • Location: BakerRipley Central at 4450 Harrisburg, Houston, TX 77003; however, this internship will be remote until in-person activity can safely be resumed.
