DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The City of Houston is seeking interns to assist the Parks and Recreation Department in the summer of 2021. The purpose of this position is to further the students understanding and experience in the field of the parks and recreation (programming, park planning, administration, open space management, etc). The intern will assist staff with general administrative duties including files, paperwork, data entry and word processing.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
May organize files, retrieve, and file documents.
May perform general clerical/receptionist functions (i.e. pick-up, sort, and distribute mail; operate fax machine and copiers; issue visitor passes; handle incoming calls).
May enter information into the computer under well-defined and established procedures.
May type reports and input/retrieve information from a variety of source documents.
May assist with various projects as requested.
Assists with copying, and inventory controls under staff leadership.
Must work well with children and must be at least 18 years of age.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is located indoors. There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature, and air conditions. Skilled technician in a hands-on environment and may have on-call responsibilities and rotating shifts.
This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort in a normal office environment.
Due to COVID, position may be converted to a virtual earn-n-learn training format.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and basic written instructions. May have a basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. May require a basic knowledge of a particular subject area. (Individuals may be high school students.) Must be 18 years of age or older.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
No experience required.

PREFERENCES
Preference shall be given to eligible applicants that:
*Have knowledge of MS Office Word and Excel
*Customer Service skills
*Have an interest in working with or mentoring youth
Must be between the ages of 18 and 24 years of age
You are expected to present a clean, neat, and tasteful appearance. Clothing with printed messages or statements is not appropriate. Comfortable clothing includes t-shirts, shorts, jeans, khaki pants; no opened toe shoes, shorts must be at the knee length or below. Tennis shoes are preferred due to assisting with recreational activity. Name badges will be supplied and must always be worn.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
